10 Crucial Considerations In Choosing Your Child's Secondary School

For many children entering Secondary 1, this is a milestone towards their independence as most of them will have to take public transport by themselves to schools.

When you choose a secondary school, do consider that the school hours are longer and that the students have a lot of work to do (academic and CCA). The child should still get adequate sleep to remain alert and function well the next day. Hence, it is not wise to enrol the child into a school that is far away just because it is prestigious.

So, how far is far? Most parents will agree that it is ideal to have a secondary school that takes around 30 minutes of travel each way. Also, do consider how accessible the school is in terms of public transport. Some children have to switch between buses or trains to arrive at a school. Personally, I will prefer a direct route for my child.

Lastly,  if your child is taking Tamil, do take note whether the secondary school offers Tamil during normal class lessons. If it does not, your child will have to travel to designated schools outside of normal school hours. This takes up additional time for the child.
