The fact that ‘guess-and-check’ has the word ‘check’ in it, requires students to have a column to check and present to the examination marker whether their ‘guessed’ answer is the correct one. Failing to insert a ‘check’ column might result in the loss of marks for the question.

An example of using a ‘check’ column is shown below:

Samuel has 10 coins that add up to $3.80. Some are 50 cents and the rest are 20 cents coins. How many 50 cents coins does he have?
