Last week, we posted our exclusive audio series on Power "Insider" Tips to Boost Secondary School Writing. It was a blast, and so many parents commented that they love it! However, they also asked for the transcript for the audio clips.

Unfortunately, we don't have it. But what we can do is to put up the salient points together with the link to the clip again.

The third tip was still on Situational Writing, but it was on spotting the genre to prepare for the O or N Level exam this year.

Salient Points

1. Recap. Situational Writing is a component in English Language Paper 1. It consists of 30 marks.

This component is further sub-divided into 2 sub-components - Task Fulfillment (or the evaluation of content and ideas), worth 10 marks, and Language (meaning, grammar and vocabulary), worth 20 marks.

2. In the old 2012 English Language syllabus, there were 4 genres in this Paper 1 component - Emails, Letters, Speeches and Proposals. Your child is expected to adopt different writing styles for these different given situations.

The question is, which is most important?

3. When the Letters genre came out in the 2013 O Levels, and Letters in the 2014 national exams, teachers and students begin to speculate that either Speech or Proposal will be the genre for the 2015 exams.

They were wrong. With the change in the EL syllabus in 2013, 2 more genres were actually introduced - Feature Articles and First Person Accounts (which includes Blogs, Journals and Witness Accounts).

The 2015 O Level paper saw the introduction of the Feature Articles genre in Paper 1. 80% of students were caught off guard because their teachers didn't teach them.

4. So the tip is - don't spot genres. Advise your child to be well-versed and well-prepared for all of them because all of them are equally important.
