Tip 2: Analysing the Question

1.

Analyse the question to understand what it is asking. Once you have read the question, underline the key words and note number of parts you have to look out for. Also take note of the relevant paragraphs.

For example:

“Summarise the symptoms and treatment of the childhood disease of measles.

2.

Use only information from paragraphs 1 to 3.”

This summary is asking for two parts – 1. symptoms and 2. treatment of measles and you need to look for the information from paragraph 1 to 3.

Analyse the question to understand what is it asking. Some common possibilities include “why” (reasons) and “how” (a procedure or a method). You can also rephrase the question in your own words to understand it better.

Example:

‘how the animal kingdom embraces democracy’ means how different animals are able to give their opinions and influence group decisions.

3.

Finally, go to the passage and mark out the paragraphs you are supposed to get the information from. You can draw a line or bracket the relevant paragraphs
