Tip 7 of 12 - Sleep Early

Remember the tip about doing sports? If possible, do it before dinner or just after. Why? Once they spend the energy, it’s easier to encourage an early bedtime. That also addresses problems with over-stimulation and difficulty in sleeping due to attention problems.

Also, if your child is still young, bedtime stories are good for a night’s wind-down. Older ones may enjoy soothing music.

Tip 8 of 12 - Have a “Let-Go” Time

Let’s face it. All the tight control over your child is going to sap your energy. He will feel drained too. So, letting go once in a while is okay. You are after all human.

Letting go can be bringing your child to an indoor playground, letting him dance it out on an X-Box game, or just allowing him to run it out with his sibling at the void deck. Treat this as a form of letting him recharge his batteries.

But don’t do this too often. Once a week is good enough.

Tip 9 of 12 - Eat Fresh Natural Food

Though food is not the direct cause of ADHD, eating the right ones is crucial to remedy his symptoms.

Eat fresh natural food such as red meat, fish such as sardine and salmon, nuts and seeds, eggs and leafy greens.

Attempt to let him eat his meals at regular times.

Avoid processed, fast or junk food, especially candy, gassy drinks, cake mixes and frostings, energy drinks, frozen fruits and vegetables, and surprise!, certain types of fish like shark, mackerel and swordfish.

Tip 11 of 12 - Try Using Essential Oil

Essential oils are extracts from parts of various plants. These oils are then distilled into extremely concentrated forms to be used as treatment. Essential oils are often as aromatherapy, but some can be applied directly on skin or even taken orally. But read the labels first.

Of particular interest to ADHD children is an oil by the name Vetiver. This oil has an earthy smell that soothes, calms and earths. It has also been documented to relieve shock and trauma.

Vetiver is often applied directly on skin, although inhaling it, or used in a diffuser are also perfectly alright. I have also read that it also comes in a pill form that can be taken as a dietary supplement.

Tip 12 of 12 - Introduce a Dog

For those who are considering a dog, this is a good opportunity. Dogs are often used in behavioural therapy, and they can have positive results in aiding to combat ADHD. Cats may seem to have the same effect, but since they are more independent, they may not be as useful. Rabbits, hamsters, birds and fishes aren’t too “interactive”, so you may like to rule them out.

Take note that the dog must be child-friendly. There may be occasions when the hyperactive child “abuses” it, so make sure it can put up with rough play. In this case, an adult dog may be better than a puppy.

Dogs teach children with ADHD to be responsible, as there is a need to adhere to routines like feeding and bringing him for walks. This also encourages the child to be more outgoing.
