Habit 3: Involve siblings in taking on responsibilities together in the family

1.

Siblings can turn out to be great teammates when they learn to work together through shared responsibilities. This creates synergy and mutual understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses over time.

2.

Having a checklist of daily-to-dos pasted visibly on the wall serves as a great reminder to assume responsibilities. For example, these tasks could include the following:

- putting toys away after play

- share the load in carrying library books home

- bring in plates, bowls and cutlery into the kitchen after meals

- going around the house to make sure all windows are closed and lights and fans switched off before leaving the house

3.

Occasionally, parents can introduce mini projects for siblings to work on and through working out details and expectations, this gives them opportunity to communicate at a deeper level. Some projects could include:

- planning a birthday party for a parent

- deciding how an outing should go

- carving out the route to get from place to place on a road trip

- coming out with a plan to spring clean the house

4.

In time to come, when the differences are ironed out and they get more familiar with each other’s working styles, working as a team only gets easier and results more dependable.
