Day 1: What A ‘Cloze’ Approach!

Hi, I’m Teacher Rosalind from Fun Language Learning. This is the first article of the 14 Closely Guarded Cloze Tips series brought to you by LearnSuperMart and Fun Language Learning.

As a bilingual specialist, I help Primary and Secondary school students achieve their desired grades in English and Chinese by guiding them to develop effective language learning strategies and skills.

1. How do you usually tackle Cloze Passages?

Do you fill in each blank with the first word that comes to your mind as you read?

Does your mind draw a blank as you stare at a blank?

2. Here is an approach you can use to tackle Cloze Passages efficiently and effectively.

Set aside at most 15 minutes for this section.

Step 1: Read the whole text

•Warm up and get the gist of the topic.

Step 2: Highlight clues and infer

•There are two types of clues:

→Language Clues

→Background Clues

Step 3: Fill in the blanks

•Write down a few possible word choices in pencil above each blank.

•Read the sentence silently, substituting each word choice into the blank as you read.

•Choose one word that is supported by clues and sounds the best.

•Skip the blank if you can’t think of a word. You might find clues later on.

Step 4: Read the text again

•Check for tenses, agreement, word form and spelling.

•Go back to the blanks you have skipped and repeat Steps 2 and 3.

Knowing the approach to Cloze Passages is important but not sufficient. In the rest of this series, we will find out how to use this approach. Stay tuned.
