Day 7: I Have The Power To Modify And Qualify

Hi, I’m Teacher Rosalind from Fun Language Learning. This is the seventh article of the 14 Closely Guarded Cloze Tips  series brought to you by LearnSuperMart and Fun Language Learning.

As a bilingual specialist, I help Primary and Secondary school students achieve their desired grades in English and Chinese by guiding them to develop effective language learning strategies and skills.

1.  One huge aspect of Language Clues is ‘Parts of Speech’. Understanding how a word fits in a sentence helps you select the most suitable word choice.

From the title, can you guess the part of speech we are covering today?

2.  Did you guess Adverbs?

Adverbs modify or qualify the meaning of a verb, adjective, clause or another adverb.

I was running aimlessly around the field when I saw her. Immediately, I called out to her from afar. Somehow, I always bump into her. Well, I think I’m completely in love with my puppy.

  • Aimlessly, Somehow → Adverb (in what manner?)
  • Around, Afar → Adverb of place (where?)
  • Immediately→ Adverb of time (when?)
  • Always→ Adverb of frequency (how often?)
  • Completely→ Adverb of degree (how intense?)

3.  How do you identify that an adverb is required?

Clue 1: It is near a verb, adjective or another adverb.

  • I almost tripped and fell. (modifies the verb ‘tripped’)
  • He reads extremely fast. (modifies the adjective ‘fast’)
  • She watches movies very often. (modifies the adverb ‘often’)
  • Joan cleaned the house till her arms ached. (modifies the clause ‘clean the house’)

Clue 2: It answers how, when, where, how often and how intense something is.

  • He reads extremely fast. (how intense)
  • She watches movies very often. (how often)

4.  Try this:

i) Grandma is lonely because we ____________ visit her.

ii) ____________, I am going to wake up at 5am. Subsequently, I will do the same every day.

iii) Jack ____________ wanted to know what happened.

iv) Leave the books over _________. I will collect them later.

v) There is __________ little ice cream here. Let’s go somewhere else to eat.
