Day 9: I Might Be Small But I Make A Big Deal
Hi, I’m Teacher Rosalind from Fun Language Learning. This is the ninth article of the 14 Closely Guarded Cloze Tips series brought to you by LearnSuperMart and Fun Language Learning.
As a bilingual specialist, I help Primary and Secondary school students achieve their desired grades in English and Chinese by guiding them to develop effective language learning strategies and skills.
1. One huge aspect of Language Clues is ‘Parts of Speech’. Understanding how a word fits in a sentence helps you select the most suitable word choice.
From the title, can you guess the part of speech we are covering today?
2. Did you guess Prepositions?
Prepositions link nouns and pronouns to other words in a sentence.
She was at the field in the morning when I saw her. As I was across the field, I called out to her. She told me that she was coping well with her work.
3. How do you identify that a preposition is required?
Clue 1: The blank is before a noun or ‘–ing’ verb.
Given the circumstance, he has already done his best to make an informed decision. (before the noun ‘circumstance’)
The detective managed to reconstruct the crime scene without missing a clue. (before the ‘-ing’ verb, ‘missing’)
Clue 2: The blank is after a verb.
The child takes after his father. (phrasal verb ‘takes after’= resembles)
Dion listens to the teacher attentively. (prepositional verb ‘listens to’)
4. Try this:
i) I asked my teacher ________ approval. However, he did not approve __________ my proposal______ the science project.
ii) The pen __________ carvings belongs to me.
iii) I did not mean to butt _________ on your conversation.
