LearnSuperMart is happy to collaborate with Fun Language Learning again in this new series – 14 Closely Guarded Cloze Tips . This 14-day series is suitable for students from P3 to P6.

Hi! I’m the founder of Fun Language Learning, Teacher Rosalind.

As a bilingual specialist, I help Primary and Secondary school students achieve their desired grades in English and Chinese by guiding them to develop effective language learning strategies and skills.

The tips I’m sharing are borne out of our classroom experience and have helped students ace Cloze Passages.

I’m sure you know what Cloze Passages are.

In the PSLE English paper, they are texts with 15 blanks in which you fill.

You probably have done quite a number of Cloze Passages.

Have you ever wondered why you do Cloze Passages?

If you have, write down a few reasons now.

If you haven’t, think of some reasons now.

In any case, there are no fixed answers to this question.

Many of you would have recognised that this is a high weighting component (15 marks out of 95 marks to be exact) in Paper 2.

But is that all to it?

Of course not.

Cloze Passages also:

1)Power up your vocabulary like Super Mario

2)Train you to find clues like a detective

3)Teach you to anticipate information like a crystal ball reader

4)Inspire you to tap into your background knowledge and experience like a Kungfu master

When you can do the above well, you can read and understand texts better.

When you read and understand texts better, you enjoy what you read and broaden your horizons.

When you broaden your horizons, you can be a superhero to the world.

So, why are we asking why we do Cloze Passages?

Because doing something without knowing why is just robotic.

Now that we know the reasons for doing Cloze Passages, the next question is “How do we approach it?” Stay tuned for the next lesson.
