Yes, this is a very common misconception, even for some adults.
Spiders have 8 legs and 2 body parts. Spiders belong to the arachnid family, which also includes scorpions and ticks. Insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts.

There are only around 4,000 types of spiders in the world. For insects, there are already 900,000 known different kinds, representing 80% of the world’s species. Scientists estimate there could be up to 30 million types of insects!

What is even more astonishing is the number of individual insects being estimated to be alive at a time – 10 quintillion or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000! That 10 billion billions! If you manage to kill 1,000 insects a minute with your bug spray, killing all the insects in the world would take you 19 trillion years! That’s way, way longer than it takes to form the entire universe!
