Common Primary School Science Misconceptions 14

The strength of a magnet depends on the degree in which it has been magnetized, not the size.

Consider this scenario, whereby you stroke a large piece of iron once versus stroking a small piece of iron 30 times, which would be stronger ?

If all other variables remain the same, then the small piece of iron would be stronger.

Look at the below question.  Magnet Y and X both can attract 4 paper clips. Hence, even though Magnet Y is smaller in size, it is equally strong.

The answer to question 2a : The size of the magnet does not affect its magnetic strength.

On this topic, I was surfing and saw a video made by a few students from Fairfield Methodist Primary School.

The title of their project is: "What can affect the strength of magnet?"

It's made by one of the students, and is rather shaky. Nevertheless, the kids had fun experimenting among themselves.

Watch it here.
