The below is the general approach on attempting Cloze passages.

1. 1^st reading – read entire passage to have a feel of the topic / theme.
2. Underline clues (Structural Clues and Contextual Clues).  I’ll covered these clues in detail later.
3. If you have 2 or more suitable words, write them neatly on top in pencil.
4. Select the best word by “reading aloud” softly because sometimes the eyes are misleading.
5. If you are stuck, move on to the next blank. You should spend no more than 15 minutes for the entire passage.
6. 2^nd Reading – After all the blanks have been filled in, read the whole passage again.
7. Check for Tenses, Subject-Verb Agreement and Spelling. It would be a waste if you have the correct word, but in the wrong tense or wrong spelling.
8. Do not leave any blanks. Remember, as long as it is filled in, you stand a chance of having it correct. It is better than an immediate 0 mark for that blank.
