Comprehension Cloze is a component in the PSLE which makes up of 15 marks out of 95 marks for Paper 2. It is a passage with estimated 200 words, excluding the 15 blanks that the students have to fill in.

For the lower primary, Comprehension Cloze would be much easier as there would be helping words for the children. They need to fill in the blanks using one of the words from the given list. This usually poses no problem for most children.

However, difficulty level increases at higher primary where the students would have to fill in the blanks, tapping on their knowledge, grammar, vocabulary and thecomprehension of the passage.  Many parents are baffled when it comes to helping their children in this section.

“So, how does one do well for this component?” my friends always asked me. Well, the answer is to READ A LOT, especially formal articles such as Reader’s Digest, National Geographic and Straits Times.   A lot of experienced friends shared that schools love to extract Close passages from them for the school examinations.

What if the children are reluctant readers?  What if the children are stuck in the Close passage in the midst of the examinations?

Stayed tuned for the coming tips on how our children can do better in this section.
