Once your child understood the theme required and thought of an interesting conflict, he now needs to decide on the dominant emotions of the characters in the story.

What is this that we are talking about? Remember the Disney animation film “Inside Out” where Riley, the main character is controlled by five emotions?

While emotions are very complex, there are only a few emotions that are commonly experienced by us.  These include happiness, sadness, fear, excitement and anger.

For example, if the essay theme is on surprise, then your child should include emotions of fear and excitement. Likewise, for an essay that talks about disappointment, he should include emotions such as happiness leading to sadness.

Once your child has these dominant emotions figured out, he will then need to include appropriate words and phrases to describe these emotions. This will make the story richer by showing appropriate vocabulary.
