Recap.   What is a Compound Subject ?

  • When a sentence has two or more nouns to form a single, larger noun phrase, that’s called a “compound subject.”

2.   Intervening words such as “as well as”, “together with”…

  • The verb has to agree with the first subject in the sentence. You can ignore the subjects within the two commas.

E.g.

Jane, as well as her friends, was invited to the birthday party.

The cars, as well as the bus, were stuck in traffic.

The ship, together with the crew, was saved.

The mushroom pies, together with the birthday cake, smell delicious.
