Whom and Who. When to use which?

Most of our children will be confused with these two connectors because they look and sound so similar to each other. Even adults can be stumped too with using "Whom".

This article is going to focus on "Whom" because "Who" is relatively easy and most children can do it intuitively. But, they tend to use the same rules and application when they try to join two sentences using "Whom".

Bascially, "Who" is used with the subject (doer of an action or the described) while "whom" is used with the object (receiver of an action or the description).  Hmm, these words also seem difficult to understand without some examples to illustrate.

Example:

That is the waiter. The customer scolded him.

-> That is the waiter (receiver of the action) whom the customer (doer of the action) scolded.

One more thing,  when we use "Whom",  it usually is followed immediately by another noun whereas for "Who", it usually is followed immediately by a verb. So, for the "Whom" questions, get your child to first underline the two nouns and remember this format [Noun 1 - receiver of the action] Whom [Noun 2 - doer of the action].
