Nailing Challenging Secondary School Physics

Topic: Heat

Key Words: Free electrons, heat transfer

Answer: Metals have free electrons that speeds up the process of heat transfer. Non-metals do not have free electrons. This prevents non-metals from conducting heat as fast as metals.

Tip: Certain students still have the primary school concept. They would just say that metals are good conductors of heat. That’s it. At the secondary 2 level, teachers are expecting a better understanding than that. It is best to mention about free electrons to explain why metals are better conductors of electricity.
