Topic: Heat

Key Words: Expand, density, fresh air, convection current

Answer: Heat from the fire will cause the air around it to expand. This will cause the density of the air to decrease causing it to rise. This will cause fresh air to enter the coal mines from the ventilation shaft that does not have the fire. This sets up a convection current that provides fresh air for the miners.

Tip: Certain students will answer the question by just saying that hot air rises above the fire. For this type of question, that is not a sufficient answer.
