What is the aim of the experiment?

This is one of the common questions for experimental questions in Booklet B of the Science paper.  The student is required to state the aim of the experiment. He is not required to interpret or describe the results.

2

There are two ways of answering this type of question but you would first need to understand Independent and Dependent Variables.

If you do not know what are Independent and Dependent Variable, read up on them via Experimental Questions - Understanding Variables.

a)

To find out if/whether the <Independent variable> affects the <Dependent Variable>.

b)

To find out how the <Independent variable> affects the <Dependent Variable>.

3

However, you need to know when to use if/whether" or "how" in your answer.

a)

"if/whether" -  Usually, there are only 2 set-ups - one experimental, one control setup

E.g.  To find out if/whether water is required for photosynthesis.

b)

"how" - Usually, there are more than 2 set-ups

E.g.

The below is a question from the P6 Science SA2 paper from Catholic High.

Answer : To find out how the colour of the filter affects the rate of photosynthesis.
