You have heard that it is important to HIGHLIGHT. But what exactly does your child higlight ? If your child is highlighting everything, then there is no point to it. You might as well take away the highlighter. It's a total waste of your money.

2

Here are some things that I tell my son to highlight.

a)

Aim

b)

Differences

c)

Negatives like “False” or “Not”

d)

"Based only on the diagram above"

When you see such words, you should only answer the question based on what you can see in the picture.

e)

"All", "never", "always", "none".

Do take note that sweeping statements are usually wrong and that these words usually are there to trick the careless children. I know because it happened to my son in his recent CA1 for P6.

f)

Units

g)

"Explain", "Describe", "State", "List", Classify", "Draw", "What do you think", "Identify" etc. These words are very important as they tell you what is required of the answer.

E.g.

If it is "State" type, all you need to do is to answer directly and briefly. No explanation is required.

If it is "Compare" type, you would need to provide the similarities and differences between the objects. For such questions, comparative words such as "greater than" , "lesser than", "most" etc have to be given.

If it is "Explain" type, your child would need to give a detailed answer using the Cause and Effect way of answering.

h)

For web of life questions, my son finds it useful to highlight different food chains using different colours.

i)

For electricity of questions, your child can also highlight the pathway of the electric current.
