Last week, we posted our exclusive audio series on Power "Insider" Tips to Boost Secondary School Writing. It was a blast, and so many parents commented that they love it! However, they also asked for the transcript for the audio clips.

Unfortunately, we don't have it. But what we can do is to put up the salient points together with the link to the clip again.

The fourth tip was on Continuous Writing, and how your child should effectively prepare for this section.

Salient Points

1. Continuous Writing is the third Section in English Language Paper 1. It consists of 30 marks.

2. In the old English Language syllabus, there were 4 genres of writing in this component - Narrative, Recount, Argumentative and Discursive.

Because Argumentative Writing was perceived to be the most difficult genre to prepare for, teachers normally advised to steer away from the Argumentative Writing question, and to stick to the Narrative or Recount Writing questions.

3. However, in the current syllabus, many teachers thought Cambridge would do an about-turn in 2014 so they advised their students to concentrate on Argumentative Writing instead. This text type never came out.

4. The bottomline is not to pick genres. Your child needs to master all 5 text types. Yes, 5 types because of the addition of Mixed Essay, or what is commonly known as the 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 type.
